On the Go: Navigating Your City is part of the ICARUS – or Integrated Climate forcing and Air pollution Reduction in Urban Systems – project, which is a large research collaboration in EU financed by the Horizon2020 program.
Participating in the project are 18 Partner Institutions from nine different European countries, who are collaborating across borders and fields of research to create an in-depth, comprehensive understanding of how urban European populations are exposed to air pollution and how it affects the health and well-being of citizens. Moreover, the project also seeks to explore how climate change is governed at urban levels. This enables us to identify how we can reduce the carbon footprint and improve the air quality and health of cities.
The duration of the ICARUS project is four years, during which we will produce a brand-new toolkit for assessing and evaluating the effort of European cities to combat air pollution, mitigate climate change and improve the health of urban residents. This toolkit will assist us in developing and implementing win-win strategies, where the solution of one problem will not be at the expense of another.
Part of the data collection in ICARUS consists of so-called agent-based modelling. This means, that a significant part of the data is produced by local population subgroups, industries, and service providers. ICARUS does thus not only use technically collected information but also information based on social, cultural, socio-economic, and structural aspects.
The researchers will furthermore examine visions and scenarios of healthy green and post-carbon cities, and – based on the knowledge produced in ICARUS – develop findings and recommendations for achieving the future green city, where environmental and health risks are minimized. Transition pathways will be created to guide the cities of today to become the good cities of tomorrow – both for the residents, the climate and for future generations.

On the Go: Navigating Your City is an important part of the Danish contribution to ICARUS as Aarhus University is the only Danish partner in the project. Through a map-based survey, the On the Go-project seeks to explore the mobility behavior and travel patterns of the residents in Roskilde, Copenhagen, and Frederiksberg Municipalities – and that is why your participation is essential for ICARUS!
