Air pollution

WHO identifies air pollution as one of the world biggest environmental problems today, following climate change. Air pollution is associated with:

  • Health effects both worldwide and in Denmark
  • Reduced biodiversity
  • Loss of crop yields
  • Climate change

The Department of Environmental Science carries out comprehensive research in order to improve both knowledge and mapping of air pollution. We work towards a better understand of where air pollution originates from and how physical, chemical and biological processes affect air pollution. Our research is based on interactions between experimental studies, development and application of advanced air pollution models.

An important task for the department is to provide research-based consultancy for the public sector; a function we have been in charge of through several decades. Two major consultancy assignments include

  • Carrying out the national air pollution monitoring program as well as the national emission inventory.
  • Investigations of impacts related to potential initiatives for air pollution regulations.
