Title:
”Aerosol/climate research with the GISS ModelE Earth system model”
Abstract:
Aerosols affect the Earth system both directly and indirectly, and the understanding of their interactions with climate is very important but at the same time highly uncertain.
Important aerosol sources, like from anthropogenic activities, the ocean, biomass burning and volcanoes, affect both clouds and the radiative balance of the atmosphere.
An accurate parameterization of aerosol-climate interactions is important for all climate assessments.
At NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, active research tries to improve our understanding in the Earth system.
This presentation will touch on many aspects of it, using aerosols as the link: how well aerosols are being simulated, with focus on secondary inorganic ones;
how sea spray composition affects clouds; how agricultural emissions affect air quality; and how volcanic eruptions impact the stratosphere and the atmosphere as a whole.
Future development plans will also be presented, related with interactive biomass burning emissions and aerosol microphysics advancements related with organic aerosols.
Dr. Tsigaridis holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering from the Department of Chemistry, University of Crete, where he did simulations on the effect of organic
aerosols on the atmosphere and its energy balance with the use of a 3D model.
His research interests are atmospheric composition and chemistry, Earth System and planetary modeling, chemistry/aerosol/climate interactions and feedbacks,
and land/ocean/atmosphere interactions and feedbacks.
He has published studies for the present, preindustrial and future atmospheres, as well as biogeochemical cycle studies on the terrestrial biosphere-atmosphere system and
the ocean-atmosphere system.
He has an H-index of 21 and 2828 citations is WoS. He was the leader of the AeroCom organic aerosol intercomparison exercise, the largest model intercomparison exercise to date
when it comes to aerosol modeling, with 31 global models and 71 authors from 45 institutions around the world.
All are welcome
Best regards,
