Contaminants in the Arctic

- a research area within the section MITO (Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology)

The accumulation of organic contaminants in the Arctic is an environmental challenge, which the section has addressed for many years. The rapid climatic changes in the Arctic also seem to affect contaminant dynamics. In addition, concentrations of internationally regulated compounds generally decrease only slowly in the Arctic. Further, these compounds are often replaced by compounds which are potentially similar in their environmental fate. Research into the processes of contaminant transport to and accumulation in the Arctic has been a focus area in the section, mainly in national and international collaborations. The section has delivered substantial contributions to the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP). The lead of the AMAP POP expert group is located in the section, in addition to leads from Canada and Sweden.
