The role of microorganisms in the sustainable recycling of resources in nature and society

In the future,  intelligent recycling of organic wastes between urban and arable systems must ensure that the elements N, P and C are returned to arable land in a safe and sustainable way, while much of the organic fraction is used for production of bioenergy. This is a concerted action area  for both environmental and future economic reasons. The microorganisms perform many of the important conversion processes in the system as well as in arable soils. The Section for Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology (EMBI) will be involved in this research.
