BURDEN OF FOODBORNE DISEASES IN THE EUROPEAN REGION

UN City
Marmorvej 51
Copenhagen, Denmark
Thursday, 3 December 2015
12.00-15.00

The burden of foodborne diseases has significant consequences on health and the economy, in both developed and developing countries.

WHO launched in 2006 an initiative to generate the first ever estimates of the global burden of foodborne disease to provide Member States with data and tools to support policy-makers and other stakeholders to set appropriate, evidence-informed priorities for food safety at country level.

The results of this work, developed by the WHO advisory group, the Foodborne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG), will be launched in early December 2015.

In addition to providing global estimates of the burden of foodborne diseases, the FERG data also provides regional estimates.

On 3 December 2015, at the UN City in Copenhagen, Denmark, WHO Regional Office for Europe will organize an event addressing the burden of foodborne disease estimates for the European region.

Following a presentation of the FERG data, a moderated discussion will take place with panelists from FERG, EFSA, ECDC, the Danish Consumer Council and WHO, to discuss the relevance of the data for European authorities, the food industry and civil society.
