Spectacular smoke plume - Borex dispersion experiment

Shortcut to the present page:  http://envs.au.dk/borex

The video below illustrates the effect of atmospheric stability conditions on dispersion of a smoke plume. The 3 minute video clip was recorded during the Borex dispersion experiments in Borris, Denmark in 1992 and 1994.

A very visible plume was released from a 21 m high mast.

There is a sequence from the afternoon of July 23, 1992, between 16 and 18 hours local time. Strong insolation and weak winds lead to spectacular movements of the smoke plume, illustrating the large dispersion taking place under unstable atmospheric conditions (convective conditions).

A second sequence shows the completely contrasting behaviour that occurs in the evening (stable conditions), when the plume has an apperance almost like a pencil for hundreds of meters.
