Oil pollution

When the visible oil from an oil pollution is gone, there are still a number of oil components present in the environment. These are the most toxic and less degradable chemical compounds of the oil. The compounds can affect living organisms in the environment and it is therefore important to focus on their fate and degradation. Over the years, we have built up expertise about the degradation of oil and identification of oil components in the marine environment, especially under Arctic conditions.

At the Department of Environmental Science we are researching in the fate and impact of oil pollution and oil components in the marine environment.
