Ecosystem services from marine and freshwater systems

Environmental regulation has had significant emphasis on achieving good ecological status of freshwater and marine systems.

The Department of Environmental Science has developed approaches and models to link management strategies of agricultural systems to marine and freshwater quality. This has focused on the development of spatially explicit models to understand cost effectiveness of alternative strategies and the synergies and trade-offs between meeting water ecosystem services and terrestrial ecosystem services. Research activities have investigated the costs and benefits of investing in blue biomass production.  Furthermore, research activities have aimed to understand the cultural services related to freshwater and marine systems.

Research projects have focused on a range of ecosystem services. The links below give access to key projects and outputs.
