Household waste in Copenhagen

Garbage chutes and source separation.

Lars Kjerulf Petersen, senior social scientist, PhD, has received funding from the municipality of Copenhagen for the project ‘Garbage chutes and source separation of household waste in Copenhagen’.

The budget is 215,000 DKK.

The aim of the project is to investigate the significance of garbage chutes for source separation and waste handling in apartment buildings. The study is motivated by (a) current ambitions to revise building regulations regarding waste handling infrastructure and (b) the upcoming separation of bio-waste which will be introduced throughout the municipality of Copenhagen starting in the fall 2017.

The aim of the study is pursued through a questionnaire survey, interviews with residents and/or caretakers and visual registration of recyclable waste quantities and qualities in a range of different apartment buildings in the municipality.
